If new proposed system is 92% ‘better’ at reducing plastic then it should be used on every salmon farm in Scotland.
These multi million pound companies can afford extra cost to reduce the environmental impact on our seas & plastic pollution on our beaches.
Over 200 salmon farm sites in Scotland, potentially using 500 tonnes of plastic feed pipe. Which industry admit will produce 125 tonnes of micro-plastic over 2 year production cycle, resulting in the need to replace all 500 tonnes of the pipe, if it hasn’t already ended up on a beach waiting to be removed by unpaid volunteers.
So 250 tonnes of plastic used annually just on feed pipe and that’s before we get into the amount of plastic used by the salmon industry in the construction of their many sea cages which also end up on our beaches.
An industry that is paid to pollute with tax payers money !
So far in 2024 North West Highland Beach Cleans volunteers have removed over 1.6 tonnes of salmon farm feed pipe from North West Highland beaches.
The end of year collective total for the North West Highlands Beach Clean Group was momentous! A total of 482 beach cleans took place by 747 volunteers who removed a staggering 12.687 tonnes of rubbish!
